Administering medication to children is like being in a war zone – with you as the attacker, unfortunately, according to your child’s perspective. Some parents can be so creative in making this step easy for their children, but in most cases, toddlers will just have a way of expressing their distaste of the medicines. We do have compounding services in our community pharmacy in Brandon, Florida. This allows for a more appealing version of the medicine for the child’s palate. But more than the taste and ease, there are still further guidelines that parents have to keep in mind before they give medicine to their little ones. Here are some:
- Verify if the medicine you’re giving is, in fact, the one prescribed by their doctor. This kind of mishap may happen when you’re administering medicine at night, and there’s insufficient light. Even when you’ve just newly purchased their prescription, many medicine containers look the same. Hence, reread the medicine label, and refer to the doctor’s prescription if possible for safety.
- Always read the instructions in the label and follow them. As you may have noticed by now, medications bought from a drugstore in Florida contains further instructions through paper slips inserted in their boxes. Follow these instructions so that you can give the medicines correctly.
- Clarify with your child’s doctor if they can take their medicines before or after their meals. This is important to know as some medicines can possibly upset the stomach when medicines are taken without food. Help your child’s condition to feel better by following the meal reminder.
- Be mindful if medicines are to be taken on an empty stomach. There are also other medications that need to be taken at least an hour before any heavy meal. If not, the medication may not be able to function effectively and relieve your child from what they’re feeling.
- Follow the measurement instruction, so you can prevent your child from being overdosed or under-dosed. When there’s no dropper available, you can use a dosing syringe or a syrup cup with a measurement guide. Make sure to use it carefully so that you can only give what they exactly need for their health recovery.
Your little one can be a bit of a handful when they don’t like the medicine you’ve prepared. So along with these guidelines, we also invite you to consider compounding their medicines. This is a type of service we provide in our medicine shop in Florida. With compounding, you will have the option to add a new flavour, convert a tablet into syrup, make it into a lollipop, or any form convenient for your little one’s intake.
We truly understand how heart-breaking it is for parents to see their children crying in pain. But even if they make such negative reactions, just remember the final result which is their total recovery. If you need further advice in giving medicines to your children, ask our pharmacists at Brandon Pharmacy.
